You Need to Wear Sunglasses in the Wintertime too!

Winter is officially here, which means in some locations biting winds and cold rain, snow and sleet aren't far behind. You wouldn't ever contemplate of leaving the house without a coat in freezing climates, however unfortunately, a lot of people leave their sunglasses behind. While many of us don't think about the shining sun during times that we are venturing out to the freezing winter climate, the sun is still shining down in colder climates, and in many instances can be even more powerful.

They didn't write a song called "winter wonderland" for no reason. Particularly after a snow storm, the world around takes on a glistening glow as a result of the sun's rays reflecting off of the water molecules blanketing the earth. In fact, without sunglasses it can downright hurt your eyes when you first step outside after a fresh snow. The ultraviolet sunlight that we are all so careful to avoid during the summer can actually be more hazardous during the wintertime since it reflects off the snow or ice, resulting in a second exposure. This is why a good pair of sunglasses is a necessary part of your winter wardrobe.

While you want to feel great in your sunglasses, the most important consideration when deciding upon a pair of sunglasses is making sure they will properly protect your eyes. Be sure the lenses are 100% UV blocking by checking for confirmation that they are labeled UV 400 (this means they block all light with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, which includes both UVA and UVB rays.) Don't worry, proper protection for your eyes doesn't mean you have to buy the most expensive pair. Dozens of affordable brands are made with full protection.

Another important feature in picking the right sun wear is size. You want to make sure your glasses cover as much of the area around your eyes as possible. The larger the surface area covered by your sunglasses, the less harmful UV rays will be able to get past your sunglasses. Glasses with side shield will also keep radiation from entering through the sides.

Just as most people are aware that sunglasses are essential to wear at the beach because the water intensifies sunlight, this also applies to frozen water sources including ice and snow. Consequently it is just as important to wear sunglasses during times when you go out in wintery conditions. Additionally UV exposure is stronger at greater altitudes such as mountain ski slopes.

Be in the know about the risks of UV damage to your eyes throughout the year. Make your sunglasses a fixed part of your routine.
